My husband and I are brand new sailors. We took three levels of ASA sailing classes in June and bought our first sailboat two weeks after. Since moving our new-to-us boat into a marina on Lake Michigan, we've been sailing as much as we possibly can. So, I loved reading this! I especially loved your description that "sailing is like owning a hundred-year-old home built on stilts and standing on the hurricane side of Florida." We are discovering the truth of this. And yet, we still want to do it. So it is with the things (and the people) we love.
Yes, Stephanie has mentioned your travels! I don't think I've ever been on Chas's boat without having to fix something. Then on rentals, I've fixed dinghy motors, lost an engine in the middle of the Adriatic, lost a rudder chain in the Caribbean, and lost all our fresh water in the BVI's. The list goes on. But always an adventure!
We've been living full time in an RV since early 2020, and it's the same story. Always something to fix, always a new adventure. So, we feel mostly undaunted about taking on a boat. My husband is quite good at fixing things, which is why it works. This summer has already been full of repairs! But, the reward of being on the water without a motor is worth it. Stephanie sent me this post this morning and I'm so glad she did!
